Gögginger Römerturm
Gögginger Römerturm stands in the former Seyssel estate park, accessible from the Göggingen Kurhaus park in Augsburg. This Moorish garden pavilion forms a round, two-storey building about seven and a half metres wide. Its shallow conical roof reaches roughly ten metres.
Built before 1830, the pavilion gained its present appearance between 1870 and 1880. Thick foundation walls, about 1.3 metres wide, may belong to a medieval fortification, Roman structure, or water tower. Renovation could confirm none of these possibilities, leaving the base’s origin unresolved.
The domed basement supports a ground floor with eight pointed-arch columns, a wide windowed door, and seven openings. A spiral staircase leads to sixteen slender arcade columns surrounding a closed round room upstairs. The ground floor houses the Tycho Brahe Museum, displaying a one-to-five model of the Augsburg Quadrant and bilingual panels. The ten-metre oak-and-iron instrument was designed during Brahe’s Augsburg stay and used for astronomical measurements nearby.
