Das Heldengrab

Das Heldengrab is a war grave and memorial near the Europaweiher in Gersthofen, within the Augsburg region. Open ground surrounds the site, with the Lech nearby and little to interrupt its quiet setting. A wooden cross topped with a steel helmet marks the resting place of an unknown soldier who died during the final days of war. The cross carries an inscription about his origin and status, while the surrounding landscape gives the memorial its solitary character.

The memorial was established in the late 1940s, and a poem beside the grave bears the date 8 April 1948. Walter Plaga’s verses connect this single burial with the wider grief of families and communities affected by war. A mother who lost two sons cared for the grave, turning its upkeep into an act of love and remembrance. The poem imagines only the occasional cry of a seagull breaking the silence, a small detail that stays with you beside the wooden cross.
