Vlaaikensgang

Vlaaikensgang is a sixteenth-century alley in Antwerp’s historic centre, where narrow cobblestone paths lead through small courtyards. Eleven back houses line the L-shaped passage, with brick, sandstone, whitewashed walls, pitched roofs and round-arched doors.

Shoemakers once lived here and rang emergency bells for the Cathedral of Our Lady. Antique dealer Axel Vervoordt saved the alley from demolition in 1969, and restoration began in 1977. Today, antique shops, art galleries and a restaurant occupy the protected monument’s historic houses.

A discreet gate opens onto quiet courtyards, including a passage with a statue of Christ. Look for diamond-shaped keystones, wooden cellar hatches and wisteria flowering in spring.
