Sint-Rochuskerk

Sint-Rochuskerk stands in Deurne, a district of Antwerp, as a brick parish church shaped like a cross. Its neogothic design includes pointed arches, a front tower, and a choir closed on three sides.

The story began after cholera outbreaks in 1859 and 1866 to 1867, when residents turned to Saint Rochus, patron saint against contagious diseases. A small chapel followed in 1867, then a wooden auxiliary church in 1886, serving Drie Koningen, Exterlaer, and Silsburg. Military restrictions near Antwerp’s fortifications prevented permanent stone construction until 1892. François Baeckelmans designed the present basilica, consecrated in 1895, including its unified church furniture. A V2 rocket heavily damaged the building in 1944, but restoration returned it to parish and community life.

Inside, adjustable LED lighting now creates different atmospheres for Christmas and commemorative occasions. Over a century after consecration, the church still connects Deurne’s religious life with its neighbourhood history.
