Sint-Gertrudiskerk

Sint-Gertrudiskerk stands in Zandvliet, within Antwerp, as an oriented three-aisled parish church. Its brick walls contain sandstone bands, while the three-sided sandstone choir faces east beneath an octagonal wooden roof turret.

A chapel here became a parish church in 1124, and a new church followed around 1254. Ferdinand Berckmans enlarged the building in 1845, preserving the seventeenth-century choir, before wartime damage in 1940 led to reconstruction by Leo De Graef in 1953 and 1954. The surviving outer walls still connect that rebuilding with earlier masonry. Inside, an eighteenth-century polychrome statue of Saint Gertrude stands alongside a pulpit from the first half of that century and nineteenth-century furnishings. Nicasius de Keyser’s 1861 painting Descent from the Cross adds a later artistic layer.

The churchyard contains a grave monument for Nicasius de Keyser.
