Kasteel Hof De Bist

Kasteel Hof De Bist is a neoclassical country estate in Ekeren, Antwerp, set among paths, lawns, ponds, and mature trees. The landhouse rises on a blue-stone base beneath a slate-covered hipped roof. Built in 1873 for Emiel Edouard Guyot, the rectangular building carries plastered brick walls, pilasters, shuttered windows, and a broad northeast staircase with wrought-iron railings. Inside, the former residence serves as an exhibition space.

The surrounding park follows a late-nineteenth-century landscape design, with curving paths, dense plantings, and a figure-eight route north of the house. A former farmstead southeast of the landhouse now contains a restaurant, while its brick coach house and barn preserve the estate’s working character. The city acquired the grounds in 1968 and opened the approximately 19.5-hectare domain as a public park. Playgrounds, wider paths, tennis courts, and a northern play forest connect its historic layout with everyday recreation.

Rhododendrons line several paths beside summer oaks, copper beeches, hornbeams, black locusts, and sweet chestnuts. A bronze sculpture titled “De Grote Zee” stands among ponds, bridges, and traces of earlier garden structures. An American oak reaches a trunk circumference of 253 centimetres, while an Italian poplar measures 372 centimetres. The old wrought-iron gate on the southern side still provides a distinctive entrance into this layered landscape.
