Extra City Kunsthal

Extra City Kunsthal stands in Antwerp as a flexible institution for producing and presenting mainly contemporary art. You can move through exhibitions, debates, lectures and film screenings, with the city providing a starting point for imagining different futures. Solo and group shows give space to emerging artists alongside internationally recognised figures such as Sergei Eisenstein, Santu Mofokeng and Hans van Houwelingen.

Founded in 2004 by Wim Peeters and Antwerp art lovers, the Kunsthal began inside an old grain silo before moving to a bottling plant and later a former laundry complex in Berchem. Those changes brought exhibition rooms, artist studios, a bar, a small cinema and offices, while collaborations connect the programme with Sint Lucas Antwerpen, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Kunst/Werk. Research-led projects examine subjects including sculpture and photography, political movements, community and solidarity, often through archives or newly commissioned work.

The current three-storey building offers about 1,100 square metres for exhibitions, alongside studios and other facilities. Visitors may encounter installations that invite them to transcribe audio, listen to archival voices, join an open microphone session or contribute their own voice.
