Districtshuis Deurne
Districtshuis Deurne stands in Antwerp’s Deurne district, set within a 13,000-square-metre plot beside Rivierenhof and its arboretum. Its modernist form brings a two-storey ceremonial wing, a five-storey administrative section, and a 39-metre tower together around an open courtyard with a fountain.
The older town hall became too small during the 1940s, prompting Eduard Van Steenbergen to design this replacement in 1947. After his death in 1952, his son Edward continued the plans, with construction beginning in 1956 and inauguration following in 1964. A concrete skeleton supports white natural-stone cladding, while black finishes mark the entrance area. De Coene created much of the interior, including the fully preserved council chamber, and the mayor’s office contains Barcelona chairs by Mies van der Rohe.
The courtyard forms the building’s centre, while the surrounding greenery links civic architecture with Rivierenhof.
