Christus Koningkerk

The Christus Koningkerk stands in Antwerp as a parish church shaped by modern Romanesque-Byzantine architecture.

It first served as a museum for Flemish art during Antwerp’s world exhibition.

Architect Jos Smolderen designed the building with Boom brick, Belgian Petit Granit, and three copper-clad concrete domes.

Many buttresses, narrow lancet windows, stepped gables, and decorative stonework give the exterior its massive presence.

An elongated north tower rises above the enclosed site.

Inside, yellow Nieuwpoort brick surrounds a single-aisle basilica with blue domes and white pendentives.

Stained-glass windows designed by Eugeen Yoors and Jos Michiels complement statues, chapels, and a semicircular apse.

A large Klais organ anchors the church’s musical heritage.

The building also preserves a crucifix, a Saint Cecilia statue, and artworks in bronze, wood, and stone.

Protected monument status reflects the building’s architectural importance.

The tree-lined grounds include a parking area and a narthex beneath five saint statues.
