Marineland
Marineland stands in Antibes on France’s Côte d’Azur as an oceanarium and marine-themed park founded in 1970. Its former grounds included a marine zoological park, Aquasplash water park, Kid’s Island, Adventure Golf and Marineland Resort. The marine exhibits featured dolphins, sea lions, sharks, stingrays and orcas, alongside demonstrations and encounters led by trainers. A 30-metre shark tunnel surrounded visitors with nearly two million litres of water.
The orca complex held about 42,000 cubic metres and included a 64-metre panoramic glass wall. Wikie and Keijo, both born at Marineland, became central to discussions about captivity, care and possible relocation after closure. Twelve bottlenose dolphins lived there in 2020, including Malou, Sharky, Rocky, Dam, Neo and Nala. A sea lion presentation called Les Coulisses de l’apprentissage showed training methods and human relationships with marine mammals. Severe flooding in Antibes in 2015 caused the deaths of Valentin, a 19-year-old orca, along with sharks, sea lions and turtles. Marineland closed permanently in 2025 amid declining attendance, new French regulations and continuing debate over animal welfare.
