Sint-Agneskerk

Sint-Agneskerk stands in Amsterdam-Zuid, an area shaped by Berlage’s Plan Zuid urban expansion. Its neo-Romanesque design follows early Christian basilicas in Rome, with three aisles, a high nave, and a brick façade. A tall, almost freestanding bell tower rises beside the church, forming Amsterdam’s first example of its kind. Above the entrance, a Byzantine-style glass mosaic shows Saint Agnes, while a rose window forms a Star of David.

Construction took place in two phases between 1919 and 1932, first creating the nave and side aisles, then the transept, choir, tower, and baptistery. Inside, a flat coffered ceiling displays red, blue, and yellow panels inspired by early Christian interiors. Whitewashed walls carry murals of trumpet-blowing angels and Stations of the Cross through the side aisles. The apse holds a high altar with a ciborium and wall paintings by Joep Nicolas, while Dutch artists contributed stained glass, sculpture, metalwork, and paintings.

The church became a national monument in 1996 after community efforts opposed demolition proposals. Since 2006, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter has served the parish, where Mass follows mainly the traditional Latin Tridentine rite. An organ built by J.W. Clavaux in 1932 places its instrument on the south gallery and its console on the north gallery. That arrangement keeps the organist and choir in direct contact across the transept.
