Mariä Himmelfahrt

Mariä Himmelfahrt stands in Altusried as an early eighteenth-century Baroque church with balanced proportions and restrained exterior decoration. Its preserved form reflects Pastor Andreas Wieser, who secured the replacement of an older Gothic pilgrimage church despite opposition from his superiors.

Inside, carved crowned lions guard the pews, their almost human faces turned towards the entrance. Joseph Hengge’s paintings cover the ceiling with scenes including Christ’s birth, Pentecost, the Ascension and Mary’s Assumption, while brown-toned frescoes show biblical episodes such as the feeding of the five thousand. The high altar carries four spiral columns with gilded vines, and the Rosary Altar centres on a Madonna from 1663 surrounded by fifteen medallions. A pulpit with gilded details identifies the four Evangelists through a bull, angel, lion and eagle.

One striking detail waits in the choir: Hengge’s Last Supper measures about five by three metres, showing all twelve apostles while Judas turns away with the money bag. A votive painting from 1730 depicts two houses burning near the church while the rest of the village escaped the fire.
