Steenpoort
Steenpoort is a surviving section of Zwolle’s former city gate, standing at the corner of Steenstraat and Buitenkant. Old houses and traces of the city wall surround this quiet remnant.
Built in 1488, the gate formed part of Zwolle’s expanding defences and controlled access at the end of Steenstraat. Saint George served as its patron and symbol of protection. The tower rose above the Nije Graven moat, where trade and transport shared the water with defence. In wartime, ten soldiers could occupy the tower.
Changing military needs led Zwolle to demolish most of the structure in 1846, leaving only a small section. Later restoration kept that fragment standing beside modern city life. A commemorative stone set into a nearby plastered house wall in 2000 marks where the gate once stood.
