Potgieter

Potgieter is a bronze bust by Charles van Wijk, created in 1908 and displayed in Potgietersingel, Zwolle. It portrays writer E.J. Potgieter, who grew up in Zwolle and became known for nineteenth-century poetry and prose. The park forms part of the green ring around Zwolle’s old centre, beside the city canal and former seventeenth-century fortifications.

Hendrik van Lunteren designed the original park during the first half of the nineteenth century, while the west side developed in 2011. Three sections follow the water. The central Suikerberg rises slightly above the surrounding paths, because it occupies a former bastion. Oaks, beeches, lindens, chestnuts, shrubs, and naturalised stinze plants shape the landscape around open canal views. Asphalt covers the eastern paths, while granite and gravel appear elsewhere.

The setting also contains Koos Kroon’s 2002 steel work, Bouwstuk aan het water, and a canal fountain. The historic Burgemeesterbank commemorates Mayor Van Roijen’s twenty-fifth year in office in 1922. A distinctive Anna Paulowna tree and a children’s playground add smaller details to the park’s mixture of art, history, and recreation. Lighting, benches, and winding paths make the green route memorable between Zwolle’s railway station and city centre.
