Het Gezin
Het Gezin stands in Zwolle as a welded-metal sculpture by Henk Krijger, portraying a family beneath a roof. The figures support the roof together. Their stylised forms turn shelter into a visible image of shared responsibility and family support. The industrial material suits the modern character of postwar Zwolle.
The sculpture commemorates the completion of the millionth postwar home in the Netherlands, built in Zwolle during rapid urban growth. Queen Juliana marked the occasion with a visit. Her celebration included tea with the household and Zwolse Balletjes, a local sweet presented by a child. New neighbourhoods spread northward as Zwolle addressed housing shortages after the Second World War. Holtenbroek rose on former marshland through fast construction methods and eventually grew larger than the city centre. Against that rebuilding story, the figures show how homes offered families stability while communities changed around them.
