Beeld van Johan Cele stands on the Celepleintje in Zwolle, a bronze sculpture created by Eric Claus and unveiled in 2013. Johan Cele appears reading from an open book. The sculpture marks the place near the former Latin school where he served as rector for about forty years.
Cele led the school from 1377 to 1415 and introduced eight classes with separate curricula. Younger pupils studied reading, writing, arithmetic and Latin, while older pupils prepared for universities abroad. The school attracted students from places including Trier, Cologne, Liège, Utrecht, Cleves and Geldern. Cele also founded a library, reformed church music and worked closely with Geert Grote, founder of the Modern Devotion movement.
Curved rows of floor pots in the pavement represent pupils listening to their teacher. The open book resembles a bird’s outstretched wings, suggesting how far Cele’s educational work reached.
