Villa Wesendonck

Villa Wesendonck stands in Zurich’s Enge district, beside Lake Zurich and within the landscaped Rieterpark. Leonhard Zeugheer designed the villa in an Italian Renaissance style. Its symmetrical façades, arched windows, and ornate decoration present a clear neo-Renaissance architectural language. High ceilings shape the richly decorated interior. Otto and Mathilde Wesendonck commissioned the house, which became a meeting place for artists, intellectuals, and scientists. Richard Wagner lived nearby in the estate’s small Asyl house. Wagner composed the five Wesendonck Lieder during his association with the estate, using poems written by Mathilde Wesendonck. The villa forms part of the Museum Rietberg complex. Its collections span art from Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania, alongside Swiss masks and exhibitions in the surrounding buildings. An underground extension adds a separate modern layer to the historic ensemble. The gardens combine English landscape design with exotic and native plants around the villa. The setting joins architecture, music, and global art.
