Kirche Enge

Kirche Enge is an Evangelical Reformed church in Zurich’s Enge district, set on a hill above the city. Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli designed it in the Neo-Renaissance style.

Its cross-shaped central plan gathers the entrance hall, galleries, choir and dome around one interior space. A campanile marks the north-west corner.

The main entrance faces Zurich and Lake Zurich, with a broad granite staircase rising towards the church square. Arnold Hünerwadel’s statues stand at the stair base.

Gneiss from Ticino, Savonnière limestone, Toggenburg tuff and Baveno granite give the exterior varied surfaces. The surrounding garden includes access routes and a curved drive.

Inside, a Pavonazzo marble font, Renaissance-inspired pulpit, painted woodwork and stained glass shape the central room. Eugen Ott’s evangelist medallions and Friedrich Berbig’s windows add identifiable details.

The organ occupies the western choir extension and contributes to the church’s valued acoustics. Services, concerts and community events use the building.

The church complex also includes two parsonages and a garden shaped through several phases of design. Its architecture influenced the Kreuzkirche in Hottingen, linking Enge with Zurich’s wider church-building history.
