Speiersgasse and Freyung
Speiersgasse mit Freyung is a narrow historic lane in Germany, lined with closely spaced half-timbered houses. Dark wooden beams, pale plaster panels, small windows and varied gables create a changing view towards the Alte Freyung, now home to Brauerei Göller. Each facade adds a different layer through bay windows, repairs and later additions.
Carved details connect the lane with civic power, refuge and religious life. One coat of arms shows an imperial couple above a small image of Bamberg Cathedral, while the Leupold arms display three rooster heads and the date 1514. An inscription recalls the former freistatt, a place offering sanctuary and legal protection. Opposite, a late Gothic Madonna stands in a niche beside the site of the former synagogue.
Look for the three rooster heads, then raise your eyes to the Madonna. Together, these details bring public authority and private faith into the same close urban view.
