Welzhaus
Welzhaus is a historic university building in Würzburg, Germany, recognised as a cultural heritage monument. Its restored windows and doors retain historical appearances through traditional renovation methods. The building has served academic and cultural purposes within the University of Würzburg.
In the early 1950s, it provided space when the university’s mathematics institute was reestablished after wartime disruption. Professors Hermann Schmidt, Herbert Bilharz, and Hermann Ludwig Schmid helped shape research and teaching there. Academic use resumed officially in 1954, and many mathematicians later held professorships in Germany and abroad.
Art also entered these rooms through exhibitions organised by the Siebold Collegium of Advanced Studies. One presentation showed Roswitha Vogtmann’s abstract paintings and free calligraphy on Japanese silk paper. The works pursued calligraphic expression rather than readable characters, linking the building’s academic past with cultural life.
