Adam
Adam is a sandstone statue in front of the Marienkapelle on Würzburg’s market square, facing the busy centre. Tilman Riemenschneider completed it around 1493 as part of a pair with Eve, creating late Gothic religious sculpture for the chapel’s south portal.
The monumental figures once stood outside the entrance, where visitors could see them while approaching from the market. Preservation moved the originals to the Riemenschneider Gallery in the Museum für Franken at Festung Marienberg, while replicas now occupy their original positions. Adam’s rugged features contrast with Eve’s delicate form, reflecting the distinctive way Riemenschneider shaped faces, hands and figures.
Look towards the chapel’s exterior and you can picture the pair welcoming people from the square. Their sandstone connects Würzburg’s religious setting with the local materials used in the sculptor’s workshop.
