Landesdenkmal

Landesdenkmal stands on Adolfshöhe beside Biebricher Allee in Wiesbaden, near Henkell Sektkellerei and the Richard-Wagner-Anlage. Across the road, Henkell-Schloss provides a distinctive architectural neighbour to this historical setting.

Unveiled in 1909, the monument honours Adolph, the last Duke of Nassau and later Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Fritz Gerth designed a sandstone obelisk with a bronze statue showing the duke in a Nassau general’s uniform. Life-sized citizens and soldiers fill the richly decorated bronze frieze around the base. Wiesbaden and Biebrich residents contributed more than 100,000 marks after Adolph’s death, making the memorial a civic tribute. The inscription gained an addition in 1985, recording his Luxembourg years.

A rectangular lawn plateau surrounds the structure, with walls on three sides and small obelisks at its corners. The bronze statue and obelisk received restoration in 2009, marking the monument’s centenary. Nearby, the Aartalbahn passes beneath Biebricher Allee, while Landesdenkmal station has carried the same association since 1907.
