Stage Set

Stage Set is a public artwork by Donald Judd, set beside a path in Vienna’s Stadtpark. Its steel framework holds coloured fabric panels at different heights.

Judd developed Stage Set for an exhibition at Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts, where space and furniture shaped the setting. The installation later became part of the city’s public art.

A large steel frame gives the sculpture an architectural presence, while open air surrounds its coloured elements. Orange, yellow, blue, red, black and green occupy the panels.

Their placement creates repeated lines and open intervals, linking Judd’s minimalist language with the space of the park. Your changing viewpoint alters the colour relationships around them.

Trees, greenery and nearby paths place the installation within an urban landscape beside a footbridge over the Wienfluss. Natural light can alter how the panels appear.

Stage Set brings contemporary art into Vienna’s historic park, balancing steel, fabric, movement and open space. The work remains accessible to people using Stadtpark.
