Prinz-Eugen-Denkmal

Prinz-Eugen-Denkmal stands on Heldenplatz in Vienna as a bronze equestrian monument dedicated to Prince Eugene of Savoy. The horse rears dramatically on its hind legs above the square. Unveiled in 1865, the statue recalls a military commander of the House of Austria and reflects Vienna’s Habsburg history. Heldenplatz places it among grand buildings and another major equestrian statue dedicated to Archduke Charles.

Anton Dominik von Fernkorn designed the bronze figure, while his student Franz Pönninger took over the work after 1862. The rectangular pedestal combines Untersberger Veitlbruch stone with corner volutes and bevelled edges. Bronze appliqués show figures, fruits, coats of arms, field equipment and the names of battles. Inscription panels praise Eugene as a noble knight, an adviser to three emperors and a victor over Austria’s enemies. On the rear, lions surround the coat of arms of the House of Savoy. The raised horse stays balanced with its long tail serving as a support.
