MuseumsQuartier

MuseumsQuartier is a cultural area in Vienna’s seventh district, where Baroque buildings meet modern architecture. Its grounds cover about nine hectares and include the former imperial court stables. Renovation and construction began in 1998, creating a complex that opened in two stages during 2001. The preserved historic setting now frames new buildings designed by Laurids and Manfred Ortner.

The complex houses the Leopold Museum, MUMOK, Kunsthalle Wien and Architekturzentrum Wien, alongside studios and performance spaces. The Leopold Museum holds the world’s largest collection of Egon Schiele’s works. MUMOK focuses on modern and contemporary art, while Tanzquartier presents dance and performance within an international cultural programme. Children’s facilities include ZOOM Kindermuseum, Dschungel Wien and a multimedia lab for young visitors. Artist studios, alternative art groups and festivals extend the programme beyond museum exhibitions. The passages add smaller discoveries, including sound installations, comic art, typography and mirrored ceilings. One passage connects the area with the neighbouring Museum of Natural History, while the site also records wheelchair accessibility.
