Margaretenhof
Margaretenhof stands on Margaretenplatz in Vienna’s Margareten district, the city’s fifth district. Franz Fellner and Hermann Helmer designed the complex.
They built the multi-storey residential complex between 1884 and 1885, combining a traditional Viennese Zinshaus with the cottage idea. Each apartment has a private garden of its own.
This arrangement creates a Wohnhof, while an alley behind the main complex links sections beside wrought-iron gates. The alley connects all the building’s separate sections.
Margaretenhof represents late nineteenth-century residential architecture, with communal movement and private outdoor space within one urban property. A major restoration took place between 1981 and 1984.
You can view the façade from outside, along with small backyards visible from the surrounding street. The building is not open to the public.
Nearby Schlossquadrat occupies a revitalized fourteenth-century estate with restaurants and other businesses. Margareten district also contains contemporary art spaces, agencies, and design businesses.
