Kirche Alt Ottakring

Kirche Alt Ottakring is a Roman Catholic parish church in Vienna’s sixteenth district, Ottakring. Its steep gabled roof, three matching front gables, and simple Secessionist details frame a short nave and transept. On the north side, the neo-Romanesque portal shows Christ in a mandorla with angels, while the eastern tower rises 74 metres above the crossing.

Rudolf Wiszkoczil designed the building, Guido Gröger supervised construction, and the church was completed in 1912 after earlier churches stood here from the thirteenth century. Inside, a dome crowns the crossing, colourful windows depict six saints and Christ, and several altars surround the raised chancel. The Marian altar shows Mary on a crescent moon, with reliefs from her life and Latin Bible verses on its doors. Restoration work renewed both the exterior and interior during the late 1930s and the 1990s.

A distinctive organ occupies the gallery: three manuals follow Italian Renaissance, North German Baroque, and South German or Austrian Rückpositiv traditions. Five bells consecrated in 1954 sound from the tower, while a bell dated 1753 stands on a wooden frame inside.
