Belvedere
The Belvedere in Vienna brings together the Upper Belvedere, Lower Belvedere, Orangery, and Palace Stables. A Baroque park surrounds these historic buildings in Vienna.
Formal French gardens shape the grounds with clipped hedges, gravel walks, fountains, cascades, and sculptures. Wrought-iron gates frame the landscaped slopes and pathways.
Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the complex as a summer residence, choosing Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt as architect. Dominique Girard designed the gardens in the formal French style.
Italian artists filled the Upper Belvedere interiors with frescoes and illusionistic paintings in its principal halls. Atlas pillars stand in the Sala Terrena.
The estate later connected imperial life with public art, including the Upper Belvedere’s early museum role. The Lower Belvedere housed royal refugees and later displayed the Ambras Collection and Egyptian antiquities.
Today, the Belvedere Museum occupies this historic setting and presents art collections within Vienna’s cultural landscape. The gardens offer views towards Vienna’s city centre.
The complex is wheelchair accessible and combines Baroque architecture with formal gardens and water features.
