Palazzo Barbieri

Palazzo Barbieri rises beside the Verona Arena on Piazza Bra, placing a neoclassical town hall in the city centre. A Corinthian colonnade, pronaos, and triangular pediment shape the Avesa tuff façade above its grand staircase.

Construction ran from 1836 to 1848, creating Palazzo della Gran Guardia Nuova for Austrian Army personnel. The architect Giuseppe Barbieri supplied the palace’s design. Since 1874, Verona’s municipal government has worked inside these former military spaces. A circular rear section followed damage caused during the Second World War.

Inside, a 1595 canvas by Felice Brusasorzi depicts Verona’s victory over the Benacensi in 829. The Sala degli Arazzi contains sixteenth-century tapestries. One tapestry, designed by Paolo Farinati, shows the Veronese victory over Frederick Barbarossa in 1164. Near the entrance, a fourteenth-century fresco presents a Crucifixion with the Madonna, rescued from a private house and set into the wall.
