Giuseppe Garibaldi
Giuseppe Garibaldi stands in Verona as a bronze equestrian monument on a marble plinth. You see the Risorgimento leader raised on horseback among gardens, piazzas and other historic monuments.
Veronese sculptor Pietro Bordini created the work, which was inaugurated on 15 May 1887. Garibaldi’s campaigns in South America and Europe earned him the title “hero of the two worlds”. His Expedition of the Thousand later carried him from Quarto near Genoa through Sicily and southern Italy, making the statue part of Verona’s wider story of Italian unification.
Look closely at the bronze: the rider, horse and raised plinth follow the public-art tradition used for military leaders and national heroes. In 2011, someone covered Garibaldi’s head with a black plastic bag during an act of vandalism.
