Forte Biondella

Forte Biondella is a small Austrian fortification on the hills northeast of Verona, set among green slopes above the city. Built in 1838 under Franz von Scholl, it protected the eastern hillside and the road from Vicenza as part of Verona’s wider defensive system.

Its irregular mountain layout includes a rounded earthwork, artillery positions, semi-detached walls, and a deep dry moat cut into tuff stone. A detached rear wall frames the entrance, while a reduced casemate adds rifle loopholes and a carefully built defensive detail. Inside, three powder magazines once held up to 6,500 kilograms of ammunition, and an underground cistern collected rainwater beneath the embankment. The fort also commanded the Valpantena and the foot of San Felice hill.

Today, the Carlo Ederle Foundation uses the preserved structure for cultural gatherings, guided tours, workshops, and educational activities. A Great War museum occupies the interior, while the surrounding garden presents plants typical of the Verona region. A multipurpose room holds about 50 people, and the site’s most distinctive detail remains the dry moat surrounding the fort.
