Cangrande della Scala
Cangrande della Scala stands in Verona’s historic centre, above the northern entrance of Santa Maria Antica. The marble equestrian sculpture shows Cangrande I in armour, riding a horse above his Gothic tomb. The surrounding Scaliger Tombs form an elaborate group of funerary monuments dedicated to the della Scala family.
The work dates from medieval Verona and is attributed either to Giovanni di Rigino or Bonino da Campione. Cangrande ruled Verona from 1311, extending his control towards Vicenza and Padua through military campaigns. His connection with Dante Alighieri adds a literary thread, since the exiled poet found refuge in Verona. The statue left its exposed position in 1909 and entered the Castelvecchio Museum for protection.
A replica by Rodolfo Dusi now occupies the original place above the tomb. The preserved marble original keeps its armoured rider and raised horse as a vivid image of fourteenth-century power.
