Palazzo Giustiniani
Palazzo Giustiniani rises beside Venice’s Grand Canal in the San Marco district, with a façade shaped by late Venetian Gothic. Pointed arches and carved stonework frame windows above the water, while the Bauer Hotel and Hotel Monaco and Grand Canal stand on either side.
Built in 1471, the palace combines the larger Giustinian building to the east with the smaller Badoer-Tiepolo building to the west. Seventeenth-century modernisation added later layers to the Gothic structure. From around 1820, the Hotel Europa welcomed writers and artists, including George Eliot, Théophile Gautier and Richard Wagner, who worked here on Tristan and Isolde.
Today, the building houses the Venice Biennale, which brings exhibitions and festivals for art, architecture, cinema, dance, music and theatre into this historic setting. One memorable detail belongs to Wagner: he brought his piano and bed from Zurich, then listened to gondoliers singing at night along the canal.
