Palazzetto Stern

Palazzetto Stern stands on Venice’s Grand Canal in Dorsoduro, near Ca’ Rezzonico and opposite Palazzo Grassi. Its neo-Gothic façade presents an asymmetrical terrace, pointed arches, decorated windows, and a marble relief of Saint George and the dragon.

A two-storey Venetian-Byzantine house stood here in the early fifteenth century, built for the Michièl family. Between 1909 and 1912, Ernesta de Hierschel Stern commissioned Giuseppe Berti and Raffaele Mainella to restore and enlarge it, raising the building by one floor and reusing ancient stonework, columns, and sculptures. Frescoes and mosaics from the early twentieth century join the collection of historic details inside, where white marble columns and arches give the hotel a museum-like character.

The Grand Canal terrace offers a clear final image: Gothic columns support a wooden architrave above the portico, while the water runs directly beyond the balustrade.
