Campo San Rocco

Campo San Rocco is a small Venetian square beside the Church of San Rocco and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Close-set buildings, windows overlooking the open space, narrow lanes, and nearby canals create a familiar picture of Venice, while locals and visitors pass through on their way across the city.

The Church of San Rocco honours Saint Roch, regarded as a protector against plague. Beside it, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco preserves more than sixty artworks in their original positions, including Tintoretto’s paintings of scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Tintoretto worked on this cycle for more than twenty years, and the building has remained largely unchanged since the fall of the Venetian Republic. Nearby, the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and Ca’ Rezzonico add further landmarks to the surrounding streets.

Casanova mentioned this square in his memoirs, describing journeys through it and encounters with residents nearby. Around you, cafés, gelaterias, and artisan shops accompany the steady movement through this small corner of Venice.
