Rest

Rest is an outdoor sculpture by Hieke Luik, standing along the Maliebaan in Utrecht, Netherlands. An amorphous L-shaped form gives the work an uneven, difficult-to-define silhouette. It combines a carved dolomite base with a bronze element placed over the stone. The bronze repeats the underlying contour, creating an echo between matte stone and metal.

The sculpture dates from 1992 and belongs to the Beeldenroute Maliebaan, a public art route for women artists. The route brings together seventeen public sculptures. Initiated in 1979 by Theo Scholten, the project places works at intervals along the avenue’s green strip. Rows of elms and lindens frame the route.

Maliebaan began as a seventeenth-century place where students played kolf before becoming a residential avenue and office district. Its trees hold art among everyday movement through Utrecht. Weather reaches both materials, so their surfaces can change as the outdoor setting ages. The layered meeting of dolomite and bronze remains its most distinctive detail.
