Observatorium

The Observatorium is a steel lookout tower in Máximapark, Utrecht, designed by artist Lucas Lenglet. Interlocking circular rings shape the tower’s open structure. Its corten steel bars gradually merge with climbing plants, a change included in the original design. One plant grows quickly, while two grow slowly. A gently sloping path winds through the tower, carrying you above the treetops before returning to ground level. The route uses a continuous ramp instead of stairs. From the upper level, you can look across Máximapark towards Utrecht, Vleuten, De Meern, Haarzuilens and Harmelen. The Dom Tower also appears in the distance. Built entirely from steel, the Observatorium responds to the flat Dutch landscape and the scale of Leidsche Rijn. The Bosspeeltuin forest playground stands directly beside it. Here, art and landscape meet as the structure’s patina and greenery continue to alter its appearance. Families and children use the tower beside the playground.
