Julius Sulway
Julius Sulway is a bronze horse torso sculpture by Dutch artist Arthur Spronken, placed in Utrecht. The sculptural work dates from the year 1985.
Its raised neck and head give the fragmented form a clear sense of physical tension and movement. A rectangular pedestal made from basalt lava supports it. Spronken focused on horses, dancers, and the movement of bodies, often isolating anatomical features in expressive bronze forms. He changed from wood to bronze around 1961.
His work reflects an interest shaped by family connections with breeding and the horse trade. Julius Sulway is a variant of another Spronken horse torso in Maastricht. Spronken studied in Maastricht and Milan, where Marino Marini influenced his understanding of equestrian sculpture. His work appears in public spaces across the Netherlands.
