Sankt-Georgs-Kirche

Sankt-Georgs-Kirche stands in Ulm as a neo-Gothic basilica designed by architect Max Meckel. The church began as a Catholic garrison church.

Its broad nave and narrow side aisles create a distinctive three-aisled interior beneath painted decoration. Copper covers the roof and tower helmets.

Hand-moulded bricks with white joints shape the exterior, while iron substructures support its late-Gothic forms. The tower rises prominently before the nave.

Inside, a late-Gothic-inspired winged high altar and painted ceiling preserve the building’s religious and historical character. The ceiling includes stylised oak trees and coats of arms from the German states.

A Walcker organ remains part of the church’s interior. The organ retains mechanical-pneumatic action and pneumatic stop action from its original construction.

Painted decoration gives the basilica a distinct visual identity. The church is recorded as wheelchair accessible.

Its largely unchanged neo-Gothic fabric earned inclusion in Baden-Württemberg’s monument book. The building preserves its original architectural character.
