Goldener Käfig

Goldener Käfig is a sculpture by Dorothea Frigo in a quiet wooded area north of Ntwentyseven in Ulm. Created in 1990, it forms a cube from gold-anodized aluminium and encloses a Daphne shrub, bringing geometric precision into direct contact with living growth.

Four towers of memory inspire the cubic structure, while the golden surface suggests both value and protection. Spring and summer reveal the shrub’s vibrant foliage against the metallic sheen, whereas autumn and winter make the stark framework more pronounced. The sculpture changes with the seasons, holding nature inside a form that feels both protective and restrictive.
