Furttenbachgarten

Furttenbachgarten is a small park in the heart of Ulm, at Grüner Hof. Paths and a central fountain recall the garden designs of Joseph Furttenbach, an architect and garden designer from the early seventeenth century.

Joseph Furttenbach was born in Leutkirch im Allgäu in 1591 and later moved to Ulm after studying architecture, garden design, theatre and pyrotechnics in Italy. His gardens ranked among Germany’s early Baroque examples, combining beauty with practical use and distinguishing between flower, fruit and pleasure gardens. The park recreates a garden he designed in Sterngasse, which no longer exists.

The cross-shaped paths and central fountain preserve the clearest detail of that historical garden tradition.
