Fischkasten Brunnen

Fischkasten Brunnen stands on the marketplace in Ulm’s historic centre, close to the Town Hall and Ulm Minster. The stone fountain occupies an open, paved space surrounded by shops and buildings from the late medieval and early modern periods.

The marketplace has drawn people together for centuries, while this fountain reflects older fish-trading traditions. Its form recalls a fish box, and similar water features could support cleaning or keeping fish fresh during market days. Over time, the structure became a historical and decorative part of the square, with little elaborate ornament to distract from its setting. You can also see how the public fountain fits into Ulm’s commercial and social centre.

The surrounding Altstadt places the fountain among buildings spanning several centuries. Its wheelchair-accessible setting offers a clear view toward the Town Hall, making the simple stone structure a memorable detail in photographs of the square.
