Donaustadion
Donaustadion stands in Ulm, Germany, as a multi-purpose stadium and the home ground of SSV Ulm 1846. Football matches fill its main role, while the horseshoe-shaped ground also accommodates athletics events and up to 19,500 spectators.
Opened in 1925, the stadium formed part of a sports festival that drew around 40,000 people. Three modest stands bordered the ground then, while spectators also watched from a nearby meadow through the open end. World War II destroyed the main grandstand, and reconstruction in 1952 created the covered stand that remains today. A 1999 renovation added a covered 3,000-seat stand opposite it, recognised as Germany’s first non-smoking stand at a professional football ground.
National track and field championships took place here in 2006 and 2009. The open-end meadow remains the clearest glimpse of how this venue once expanded beyond its formal stands.
