Suso-Haus

The Suso-Haus in Überlingen connects a medieval building with the memory of Heinrich Seuse, known by his Latin name, Suso. Local tradition identifies the house as Seuse’s birthplace. Parts of the building date from the late thirteenth century, and the property originally belonged to his mother’s family. The German mystic Heinrich Seuse lived from 1295 to 1366. His writings include what is considered the first autobiography in German, helping establish vernacular literary expression. Meister Eckhart also shapes the house’s spiritual context. Since 2006, an association has operated the house with cultural and educational activities. The programme includes talks, meditation, music workshops, creative writing, lectures, readings, exhibitions, and guided tours. An installation called the Quellturm rises vertically through the medieval house. Stone, clay, and words shape its reflection on inner awareness, linked with Seuse and Meister Eckhart. The Garden of Silence provides a quiet outdoor setting. The house offers space for remembrance, music, language, writing, reflection, and dialogue around mystical texts. Guided tours present the building and its history. The Suso-Haus belongs to Baden-Württemberg’s literary landscape as a place of memory and creative work. Its rooms connect Seuse’s literary and spiritual legacy with contemporary cultural activity.
