Staedtisches Museum
Staedtisches Museum in Überlingen occupies a former patrician palace above Lake Constance. Built between 1459 and 1472, its rusticated façade reflects Italian Renaissance architecture.
Founded in 1871, the museum traces life in Überlingen, Linzgau and the Lake Constance region. Its collections span the Neolithic period to 1900. Four floors contain about 1,200 square metres of exhibitions, including regional art from the Gothic period to Classicism. Historical dollhouses form one of Germany’s largest collections of its kind. Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer’s expressive sculptures, a Gothic room and a Baroque festival hall add distinctive interiors.
The garden combines chestnut trees, sixteenth- to nineteenth-century sculptures and an old wine press. Its balustrade looks across Überlingen and Lake Constance towards the Alps. Among the gravestones, some of Baden-Württemberg’s oldest Jewish memorials preserve a particularly striking connection with the region’s past.
