Stadtgarten

Stadtgarten is a botanical garden and public park in Überlingen, beside Lake Constance and below the Molasse cliffs. Its lower and upper gardens combine flower beds, old trees, lawns, and Mediterranean plants. The rose garden forms the centre of the lower garden, while shaded arbors surround colourful planting and benches.

A fountain stands among magnolias, banana plants, beeches, and part of the city’s cactus collection. The arboretum contains an Atlas cedar, monkey puzzle tree, dawn redwood, Judas tree, and handkerchief tree. Hermann Hoch shaped the park between 1894 and 1931, after the first garden opened on former vineyard and vegetable land in 1875. The outdoor cactus garden remains visible throughout the year, while frost-sensitive plants grow in the plant house at the Villengärten.

Beeches, larches, and pines lead into the upper garden, where a cast-iron pavilion overlooks the lake, Bodanrück, Überlingen’s old town, and the Alps. A deer enclosure, the wooden Hexenhäusle from 1905, and a Kneipp basin add variety. The steep Teufelstreppe and the Seegang hiking trail bring movement to this carefully planted lakeside retreat.
