San Secondo Martire
San Secondo Martire is a parish church in Italy, rebuilt in 1867 from a design by architect Giuseppe Formento. Its measured, neo-medieval silhouette gives the surrounding neighbourhood a clear architectural focus.
The adjoining rectory followed in 1874, while the site’s religious history reaches back to a documented church in 1014. Air raids on 8 December 1942 and 13 July 1943 tore away parts of the roof, broke windows and doors, and damaged the façade and exterior walls. The parish house also suffered roof punctures, collapsed partitions, and injuries to its vaults and fittings. Post-war repairs preserved the church, which continues to serve as a parish church.
The contrast remains striking: a nineteenth-century building standing on a site with more than a thousand years of worship, with wartime damage still forming part of its visible history.
