Tromsø museum

Tromsø museum is an Arctic University Museum in Norway, where polar history, Sámi culture and aurora science meet. Its plain exterior gives little away, while nearby shores bring a salt breeze and coastal setting. Inside, glass cases, joik recordings and moving sky projections create a compact Arctic journey.

The northern lights exhibition centres on Kristian Birkeland’s terrella, a glass model that makes aurora processes visible. You can explore how charged particles and magnetic fields produce ribbons of light above Earth. Other displays bring together Sámi clothing, everyday objects, climate change and livelihoods shaped across generations. Polar expeditions, natural history collections and Arctic University research connect these human stories with scientific investigation.

Short films, time-lapse sequences and hands-on workshops turn distant phenomena into something you can observe. Walking paths and a popular beach continue the coastal experience beyond the museum’s doors. In the darkened aurora room, a pale ribbon moves across the screen like a curtain, joining ancient stories with laboratory science.
