M/S Polstjerna
M/S Polstjerna is a wooden seal-hunting ship preserved beneath a glasshouse in Norway. Its low, compact hull, dark planks and ice-worn paint reveal a vessel built for demanding northern waters. Launched from a southern boatyard in 1949, it remained in service until 1981. The ship completed 33 hunting seasons, returning with roughly 100,000 seals from western and eastern ice.
Small crews worked in close quarters through shifting polar light and long darkness. Alongside sealing, the vessel carried out polar expeditions and fishing, serving as a multipurpose workboat of the high north. Its hand-forged cleats, worn wheel and frost lines along the keel preserve details of life at sea. The glass shelter leaves the hull visible against mountain light, while salt scars and repairs keep each voyage present.
