Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle stands on a rocky promontory beside the Adriatic Sea, with its compact silhouette turned towards the water. Construction began in 1856 for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, who arranged every room around the view. Inside, low ceilings and wood-panelled walls give the private apartments the feel of naval cabins.
The library brings together wall-to-wall shelves, a patterned wooden ceiling, a large globe and marble busts of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare and Goethe. Nineteenth-century rooms add red damask, crystal chandeliers, oil paintings and antiques, while Chinese and Japanese salons reflect the period’s interest in East Asia. Outside, staircases, lawns and exotic plants lead down towards the sea, where Maximilian departed for Mexico aboard the frigate Novara.
A small round table in the sovereigns’ salon preserves micromosaic scenes of Roman monuments, presented as a wedding gift by Pope Pius IX.

The myTuur app is free, and once you are standing at a spot its story starts by itself.
Spots like this one are the stops myTuur strings into tours through Trieste. In the app, each story begins where you stand: walk up to a spot and it starts, read it on screen or listen as you go, then follow the route to the next one.
What is myTuur?
